• Civil and Hydralic Engineering (Ocean Energy Engineering)
    Fall丨Master’s Program
    Major: Civil and Hydraulic Engineering
  • Project Overview

The Master of Engineering in Ocean Energy Engineering program has first started enrolling students for Admission 2021. Based on the development strategy of Tsinghua University and the industrial demands of Shenzhen, Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School gives priority to make an overall arrangement of six top engineering disciplines, including "Ocean Energy" and so on, supplemented by innovation management. Guangdong is currently the leading  province of exploring ocean resources in China, and the development of Tsinghua's ocean discipline is highly compatible with the industrial demands of Shenzhen. This program, therefore, will provide impetus for Shenzhen's industrial transformation, help the social innovative development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and vigorously promote the "Double First-Class initiative" construction of Tsinghua University and expand the connotation of new engineering disciplines.

    Scientific Research Achievements

The discipline has been devoted to research in the direction of Ocean Energy (Civil & Hydraulics Engineering). An impressive record of achievement has been accomplished by our team in basic theory and experimental research, numerical simulation and digital twin, engineering design and practice. Outstanding achievements include The Study of the Combined Action of Wave and Earthquake on Fixed Offshore Wind Turbine is regarded as a leading level in the world. A seismic design and analysis model for marine structure has been proposed based on simulations and experiments of seabed earthquake motion and typhoon stormy wave environment. And an extreme stormy wave loading model applicable to the South China Sea has been proposed for the first time. The deep and open sea floating wind-solar-fishery integrated equipment has designed to realize mutual complementarity in wind and solar energy and solve the electricity problem of open sea fishery aquaculture. For the new type of offshore floating wind turbine, the typhoon resistant foundation form and engineering structure space node design method have been studied. In addition, the discipline has also achieved abundant results in underwater robot, big data technology of marine environment, and independent intellectual property software platform.

In terms of scientific research conditions, relying on NSF, 863, 973 and other major national projects and topics, Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School takes the lead in constructing (including under construction) a national-level research and development platform "Shenzhen Deep Sea Ocean Engineering Equipment Test Platform", a Municipal level key laboratory "Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Offshore Dynamic Environmental Evolution", and three Municipal level public service platforms "Shenzhen South China Sea Clathrate Hydrate Mining Technology Platform", "Shenzhen Ocean Engineering Infrastructure Wind-Wave Dynamic Coupling Test Public Service Platform", and "Shenzhen Marine Microbial Resources Screening and Utilization Public Service Platform", and creates a better hardware environment for scientific research on this basis, including a multi-purpose building (over 15000 square meters), the only ocean engineering pool that can generate random wind fields in the world, the only fatigue test system that can carry out 5-axis static and dynamic loading in the world, Tsinghua University's maiden ship for scientific and engineering research -"Qing Yan No.1" (1000 tons), a comprehensive test field at sea (including Shenzhen-Dapeng National Marine Equipment Sea Trial Platform, Guangdong Shanwei-Tsinghua University Marine Technology Research Center Guiling Island Marine Renewable Energy Experimental Station, and Guangxi Beihai-Tsinghua University Marine Technology Research Center Beibu Gulf Research Institute), as well as a series of interdisciplinary public service platforms, which have laid an important foundation for carrying out research in the direction of Ocean Energy (Civil & Hydraulics Engineering).

    Eligibility of Applicants

Including but not limited to, outstanding students with a solid foundation in the fields of Civil Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, Environment, Engineering Mechanics, Physical Oceanography, and Information Technology etc., who are interested in the direction of Civil & Hydraulics Engineering in Ocean Energy, and aim at making contributions to building China into a maritime power.

    Talent Training

The faculty is composed of international scholars and outstanding talents with the background of studying abroad, including academicians, full-time and dual-base teachers represented by the National Talent Introduction Program and Distinguished Young Professors. So far, nearly one hundred master and doctoral students have been cultivated. Students will be co-supervised by on-campus and off-campus academic staff, and all off-campus staff are deeply involved in cultivating postgraduates as the on-campus staff. According to the characteristics of the discipline, the program actively strengthens the construction of high-level innovation base and postgraduate practice base, and cultivates students' ability to connect theory with practice and stimulate innovations. The discipline attaches great importance to broadening international vision of all students, and actively guides them to contribute to and report on high-level international conferences. The talent training program relies on, but not confined to, the industry, showing a diversified character of employment directions. Among them, power grid enterprises such as State Grid Corporation of China and China Southern Power Grid, energy enterprises such as CNOOC and Petro China, construction enterprises such as China State Construction Engineering and China Communications Construction Company, real estate enterprises such as Vanke and Country Garden Holdings Company Limited are the main employment directions for graduates. In addition, the proportion of graduates engaged in high-tech enterprises and the financial industry, as well as pursuing further study at top universities at home and abroad, have also been increasing year by year, which has typical Shenzhen's pioneering and diversified characteristics.
