To promote the construction of Shenzhen as a global marine center and further deep-sea research, a strategic cooperation agreement was signed between Tsinghua SIGS and the Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IDSSE, CAS) on October 15, 2019. Among the attendees of the signing ceremony were Gao Hong, Executive Dean of SIGS, SIGS faculty, and Yang Ning, Deputy Party Committee Secretary and Deputy Director of IDSSE.
During the ceremony, Gao Hong highlighted marine engineering and technology as one of the key academic theme areas at Tsinghua SIGS. The strategic agreement will support Shenzhen’s development as a pilot zone of socialism with Chinese characteristics, especially as a global marine center and an international technology and innovation hub. She expressed high hopes for SIGS and IDSSE to work closely in marine engineering projects, to create joint research platforms and to nurture interdisciplinary marine science talents. She also encouraged both sides to explore new modes of collaboration between industry, academia and the government.
Deputy Director of IDSSE Yang Ning emphasized their principles of openness and collaboration, and expressed hopes to promote marine science through the creation of a university-industry research coalition. IDSSE will strive to make this partnership an example of deep-sea exploration collaboration in China. Both parties also discussed the historical ties, future plans and details of their collaboration.
That afternoon, Tsinghua SIGS and IDSSE unveiled the Shenzhen Deep-Sea Research and Development Center at the 2019 China Marine Economy Expo. The establishment of the Center facilitates marine research, talent development and transfer of deep-sea technologies. Representatives from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Shenzhen Association for Science and Technology also attended the ceremony.
Collaboration with IDSSE is a new initiative by Tsinghua SIGS to advance the integration of industry, academe and research in the field of marine science.
