SIGS Semester Online: Embracing A New Experience

Published:2020.02.18

This spring, Tsinghua SIGS will offer 192 courses in more than ten disciplines such as Electronics, Computer, Materials, Art design, Finance, and Hospital Management.

To ensure the smooth running of online classes, faculty members are supported with a team of teaching and IT staff. This may be a big change for many, but SIGS faculty and students are embracing this experience and overcoming obstacles that come along the way.

Below our professors and students share their comments on online classes.

"This teaching experience has changed my mind on online teaching, and I would definitely make use of it in the future. I was originally concerned as my 4-hour course involved art philosophy theories and analysis of artwork, but was relieved to hear positive feedback from students. They could examine artwork in more detail through their screens, and could also review difficult content after class. I see this as a time for teachers to re-examine and transform their teaching methods. I can’t help but think of this line I said in class, “Progress is made when humans face crisis with courage and creativity.”

— Nie Xiaomei, Associate Professor, Course Instructor of "Art Principles"

"This kind of online teaching method definitely has great reference value for the future. Students stayed concentrated in class because they could be called on randomly to answer questions. They could also refer to many online resources at their fingertips. Maybe we can try video interactions in the future."

—  Li Zhiheng, Associate Professor, Course Instructor of "Traffic Flow Theory and Control"

"The combination of Rain Classroom and Zoom was a very unique experience and I was pleasantly surprised. Seeing art paintings on my screen was even clearer than projecting them in the classroom."

—  Xu Ying, Master's student

"I was worried that the internet would lag and that I couldn’t communicate with Prof. Nie in time, but these concerns were gone after class. I used to take pictures of artwork in class, but now I can see them very clearly on my screen and revisit them as needed. Through the Rain Classroom platform, we each had the opportunity to express our views, and Prof. Nie immediately responded to our questions."
