Tsinghua SIGS student designs win awards in Beijing

Three Tsinghua SIGS Master of Fine Arts students were named winners at the 6th Beijing Figure Design Award of College Students. In the Fashion Design category, Ma Yanqing received first prize, while Li Chunhui and Li Xiao won excellent awards for their works.

Hosted by the Beijing Education Commission and jointly organized by the Central Academy of Drama and the Character Design Teaching Alliance of Beijing Universities, the competition was divided into three categories: fashion design, drama character design, and figure design. First, second, third prizes and excellent awards were set up for each category.

First Prize (Fashion Design Category)

 "Cocoon"

Artist: Ma Yanqing
Advisor: Prof. Zang Yingchun

Ma's “Cocoon” series interprets the power of growth in the post-pandemic era. Design patterns are inspired by how insects break through their cocoons, and black, white, and gray colors are used to create an effect of visual illusion. A combination of needle and shuttle techniques and quilting methods are adopted for the series.

Excellent Award (Fashion Design Category)

 “Exquisite Fairyland”

Artist: Li Chunhui

Advisor: Associate Prof. Wang Yue

Li’s work relies on the optical illusion effect of costumes to create a serene and secret inner realm for people suffering from social phobia or experience great pressure from life and social interaction. These imaginative designs allow people to express a more authentic self and enhance the diversity and possibility of mutual communication.

Excellent Award (Fashion Design Category)

“Stereotype”

Artist: Li Xiao

 Advisor: Associate Prof. Wang Yue

Li’s design is inspired by film montage techniques of editing, freeze-framing and narration. Through the rearrangement of clothing structure and design elements, her work reflects gender stereotypes in present-day society and attempts to give people sufficient space to express their emotions.

Held since 2011, the competition has gained strong reputation and influence over the years. It aims to improve creativity and practical abilities of students of arts and design, showcase student works, and promote exchange and development of character design education in Beijing universities.
