The 2024 Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School (SIGS) Global Summer School began with an opening ceremony held on the morning of June 25. SIGS Vice Dean Zhang Chuanjie and representatives from the school’s academic institutes attended the ceremony.

A total of 110 participants from 63 universities across 34 countries are participating in the summer school, which will conclude on July 4. Among them, 46 participants come from SIGS’s close partner institutions, including the Technical University of Munich, University of Geneva, RWTH Aachen University, Kyoto University, Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Asian Institute of Technology, Khon Kaen University, as well as Asian Universities Alliance member universities, such as the National University of Singapore, Nazarbayev University, United Arab Emirates University, Universitas Indonesia, Universiti Malaya, and The University of Tokyo.

In his remarks at the ceremony, Zhang welcomed the Global Summer School (GSS) participants. He introduced the program agenda and the city of Shenzhen. “I hope you will dive deeper into your respective academic fields, immerse yourself in the innovative culture of Shenzhen, and make the most of the opportunities presented to you,” said Zhang. He also extended his wishes for the success of the summer school and hoped that each participant would have a fulfilling and meaningful experience.
After Zhang’s remarks, staff members from the Admissions Office and Office of Communications and Outreach delivered an orientation to participants.
In the afternoon, Zhong Yuantan, a doctoral student at SIGS, gave a lecture entitled "Plants and Traditional Chinese Food Culture." Afterwards, experts from Taoyuan Service Center for Expats introduced and demonstrated the traditional Chinese folk art of handmaking clay figurines. Participants had the chance to try their hand at the craft, molding various forms of a national treasure, the giant panda.
The 2024 SIGS Global Summer School is jointly hosted by the SIGS Office of Global Affairs and Admissions Office with support from the school’s academic and research institutes. Over the course of ten days, through a combination of lectures, workshops, and hands-on projects, participants will explore cutting-edge research, gain new insights, and collaborate with leading experts. The program aims to expand participants’ global competence through cultural exchange and cross-cultural collaboration and foster their innovation and entrepreneurship skills.
