Tsinghua AI voice workshop let Sino-Thai stories “speak”

Published:2025.12.01

Nov 25, the 43rd Science-in-Practice Mini-Class welcomed 11 students and teachers from Thailand’s Chulalongkorn University for “Letting Voices Cross Borders—A Sino-Thai Youth AI Voice Creation Workshop” at Tsinghua SIGS. Yu Renjie served as the instructor, with international students from Tsinghua SIGS serving as teaching assistants.

Conducted in English, the three-hour program opened with a science talk, “Soundscape: the Smart Manufacturing Revolution,” delivered by lecturer Yu Renjie. Participants then moved to a hands-on studio where, coached by a team of teaching assistants, they combined AI image and voice generation to craft bilingual “talking posters.” Thai students wove Chinese motifs—panda, Shenzhen skyline, lotus—into their visuals, recorded 60-second Thai-Chinese voice-overs explaining their inspiration, and embedded the clips in NFC chips that turn the printed cards into playable stories.

In the final showcase, every group took the stage, waving posters that greeted the audience in the creator’s own voice. Laughter and applause punctuated each reveal, underscoring how shared algorithms can carry distinct cultural accents.

Chulalongkorn delegates called the session “a vivid tech tasting menu,” saying the bridge they felt was built not only by code, but by the human stories it amplified. This exchange strengthened their connection with Tsinghua University and Shenzhen.
