Professor Zhang Xiaoping from Tsinghua SIGS has been appointed as a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Fellow Committee for the term from January 2026 to December 2027, according to a recent announcement by IEEE.

The IEEE Fellow Committee is a high-level committee responsible for evaluating Fellow nominations and recommending a final slate of candidates to the IEEE Board of Directors for elevation to the prestigious grade of Fellow.
The Fellow grade is the highest level of IEEE membership, an exceptional honor recognizing individuals for extraordinary technical accomplishments that significantly benefit society. The total number elevated each year is limited to less than one-tenth of one percent (0.1%) of the total voting membership.
The IEEE Fellow Committee comprises 52 members, who are also IEEE Fellows, representing the 10 IEEE Regions, 46 IEEE Societies/ Technical Councils, and various affiliations.
Professor Zhang Xiaoping has worked in signal processing theory, algorithms, and cross-disciplinary applications for over 30 years. He is a world-renowned scholar widely recognized and respected in both academia and industry.
He has made fundamental theoretical contributions to wavelet transforms and optimal filtering, threshold neural networks, target localization, and graph signal processing. He has successfully applied these methods to diverse fields—including image, video, speech, and multimedia content analysis, the Internet of Things (IoT), biomedical engineering, FinTech, and marketing—driving the development of related cross-disciplinary fields and inspiring numerous young engineers and researchers.
Currently, Professor Zhang focuses on signal processing theory and its transformative applications in emerging fields such as optical information processing, the low-altitude economy, embodied AI, physics-informed AI, and FinTech.
Professor Zhang currently serves the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) as Vice President-Education, an Executive Committee Member, and a Member of the Board of Governors. He previously served on the IEEE SPS Fellow Evaluation Committee and was the Editor-in-Chief for the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Signal Processing. He also served as the Chair of the Image, Video, and Multidimensional Signal Processing Technical Committee.
Professor Zhang was selected as a Distinguished Lecturer for both the IEEE SPS and the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada.
