Assistant Professor Ouyang Zhongkun from the Institute for Ocean Engineering at Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School (Tsinghua SIGS) recently received the Outstanding Young Geotechnical Engineer Award presented by the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE), making him this year's sole global recipient.
The award was presented at the 21st International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ICSMGE), held on June 18 in Vienna, Austria. Held every four years under the auspices of ISSMGE, ICSMGE is a premier global forum for geotechnical engineering.

ISSMGE President Dr. Marc Ballouz (1st R) presents the Outstanding Young Geotechnical Engineer Award to Ouyang Zhongkun (C).
The aim of the ISSMGE Outstanding Young Geotechnical Engineer Award is to acknowledge the contributions of young members to the profession and society.
Presented every four years during the ICSMGE, the award honors up to 6 individuals (maximum one person for each region) who have made outstanding contributions to the practice or research in geotechnical engineering through their work on one or more research or industrial projects.
Ouyang's research focuses on ocean geotechnical engineering, in-situ testing and soil parameter evaluation, the cyclic response of offshore soft soils, and the bearing mechanisms of pile foundations and ocean structures. His representative work centers on in-situ testing techniques, including CPT, CPTU, and DMT, and the development of theoretical methods and engineering application frameworks for evaluating soil strength parameters based on in-situ test data. These contributions provide important technical support for geotechnical parameter characterization in complex ocean environments, offshore foundation design, and deep-sea engineering investigations.
The award not only represents international recognition of the research innovation, engineering application value, and academic influence of Tsinghua SIGS faculty but also demonstrates the achievements of Tsinghua SIGS in disciplinary development in ocean engineering, ocean geotechnical engineering, and intelligent in-situ testing equipment.
Established in 1936 by Karl Terzaghi, the founder of the science of soil mechanics, ISSMGE is the pre-eminent professional body representing the interests and activities of engineers, academics, and contractors around the world who actively participate in geotechnical engineering. The ISSMGE provides a focus for professional leadership to some 90 member societies and around 20,000 individual members, according to its official website.
