Associate Professor Yin Zhenyuan of Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School (Tsinghua SIGS), received the Donald W. Davidson Award at the 11th International Conference on Gas Hydrates (ICGH11), held at Lyon, France from June 29 to July 3. This award recognizes early-career researchers who has performed groundbreaking contributions to the field of gas hydrates within 10 years of receiving their doctorate or under the age of 40.

ICGH is the world's leading international conference dedicated to gas hydrate research and is held every three years. This year's conference marked the first joint meeting of the International Conference on Gas Hydrates (ICGH) and the European Conference on Gas Hydrates (ECGH), bringing together more than 400 researchers from 27 countries across Asia, Europe, and North America. The conference featured six sessions covering fundamentals, crystallization and flow modelling, dynamics of natural systems, geo-engineering (gas production, carbon storage, etc.), hydrate based and energy efficient technologies, as well as hydrates and astrophysics, showcasing the latest scientific advances and emerging directions in the field.

For this year’s conference, Yin led a group of seven master's and Ph.D. students from the Institute for Ocean Engineering at Tsinghua SIGS. All seven students from his research group were selected to deliver oral presentations. The strong representation reflects the research group's commitment to cultivating outstanding graduate researchers. By engaging students in cutting-edge scientific projects, the team equips young researchers with the scientific expertise, engineering skills, and global perspective needed to tackle complex challenges in sustainable energy and environmental technologies.
About Associate Professor Yin Zhenyuan
Yin Zhenyuan is an Associate Professor from the Institute for Ocean Engineering, Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School. He is also the lead PI for THU gas hydrate and carbon storage laboratory. He obtained his Ph. D. from Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, National University of Singapore. Yin has long conducted systematic research on gas hydrate tuning methods and hydrate-based sustainable technologies, achieving a series of innovative results in areas such as fundamental gas hydrate thermodynamics, microscopic characterization methods, kinetic enhancement techniques, and applications for marine resources and environment.
His research outcome promotes the development of gas hydrate science in interdisciplinary fields like deep-sea natural gas hydrate exploration and sub-seabed carbon sequestration. Yin continued to build international influence in the field of fundamental gas hydrate research, with his findings published in top-tier energy and chemical engineering journals and recognized with multiple international honors and awards, e.g., World’s Top 2% Scientist, ACS Energy & Fuels Rising Star Award and ACS I&EC Research Most Influential Researcher, etc..
Working closely with the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey (GMGS) and China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), Yin has provided critical experimental data and theoretical support for China's offshore natural gas hydrate production tests and subsea carbon storage pilot project. Concurrently, he actively promotes international scientific and technological collaborations, launching joint research initiatives with top-tier scientific institutions from many countries on new frontiers such as offshore hydrate-based hydrogen storage and hydrate-based carbon capture, establishing a broad international academic influence.
