Published:2026.08.21

A delegation from the Institute of Data and Information at Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School (Tsinghua SIGS), led by Professor Fu Hongyan, visited Chiang Mai University (CMU) from June 22 to 26 for academic exchange.

Themed frontier technologies in information and communications, the five-day exchange featured four key components: history overviews, lectures, student academic presentations, and laboratory visits.

As part of SIGS Global Voyager Initiative, the exchange program aimed to broaden international perspectives and foster research collaboration and academic exchange.

On June 23, the delegation held an exchange with its CMU counterpart. The two sides gave brief introductions to their respective development, disciplinary characteristics, research platforms, and international cooperation. They also engaged in in-depth discussions on research areas including optoelectronics, intelligent sensing, and optical communications.

During the academic presentation session, Fu delivered a presentation titled“VCSEL Enabled Integrated Sensing and Communication Systems.”The presentation focused on the applications of VCSEL technology in LiDAR and integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems, as well as the team’s latest research achievements in high-speed optical communications, high-precision 3D sensing, and multifunctional integrated systems.

The delegation’s students shared their research results through presentations and learned about a project named FireFly from CMU researchers. They also visited laboratories at CMU to gain a deeper understanding of CMU’s research environment.

“Different methodologies under different research environments can bring about new ideas. I expect to integrate what I learned from this trip into my research and adopt more open and diverse perspectives in my future research,” said Zhu Qingyang, a delegation member.

“I have gained a new understanding of team cooperation and cross-border communication. I believe this experience will encourage me to seek more international opportunities,” said Liu Longbiao, one of the delegation’s students.

The visit not only gave me a more direct understanding of the latest developments in communications technology but also strengthened my determination to pursue my research interests in greater depth, said Chen Jiawei, another delegation member.
