Tsinghua SIGS: 2019 Top 10 News Stories

1.  A new school year starts at SIGS

  • More than 800 faculty and students attended the flag-raising ceremony of the new school year.

  • Faculty and students celebrated the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China with a music video and participated in the National Day Parade.

  • Tsinghua SIGS carries out educational activities guided by the theme of “Remain true to our original aspiration and keep our mission firmly in mind".

2. Tsinghua SIGS unveils, marking new chapter in city-school cooperation

Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School was unveiled in March of 2019, seizing development opportunities of the Greater Bay Area, and focuses on cutting-edge innovation and technology to serve national and regional needs. The school lays out 7 interdisciplinary theme areas which overcomes traditional borders between academic disciplines. Executive Dean Gao Hong was appointed as “Shenzhen Talent Ambassador” and Tsinghua SIGS will nurture future leaders to fuel developmental needs of the City.




3. SIGS establishes cooperation with leading universities worldwide

  • Building upon previous partnerships with UC Berkeley, Imperial College London, Kyoto University, the Center for Research and Interdisciplinarity (CRI, Paris), Melbourne University and others, SIGS also established collaborations with Tel Aviv University, RWTH Aachen, Nagoya University, and Waseda University.

  • SIGS joined hands with international organizations to launch projects such as the UNICEF Human-centered Design for STEAM Education Program and the Gender Equality Cross-media Design Conference.

  • The 12th IUPAC International Symposium on Bioorganic Chemistry (ISBOC-12), Tsinghua – Kyoto 2019 China Japan Environmental Technology Joint Research and Education Symposium, and the Third International Conference on Energy Storage Materials (ICEnSM) were held.

  • The International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) was established to improve campus experience of international faculty and students, and to enhance current governance systems.  


4. New research platforms constructed, A.M. Turing Award RIOS Laboratory unveiled 

  • Following the construction of the Shenzhen Geim Graphene Research Center led by Nobel Laureate Andre Geim, another Nobel Prize Laboratory was established this year. The RISC-V International Open Source Laboratory (RIOS Lab) will operate under the leadership of A.M. Turing Laureate David Patterson.

  • The first scientific expedition and trial ship of Tsinghua SIGS, "Qing Yan 1" was commissioned. A maritime experimental field, wave basin and supercomputers were put into use. The Shenzhen Deep-Sea Research and Development Center was also unveiled.

The Guangdong Graphene Innovation Center was established.



5. SIGS launch New Doctoral and Master degree programs

  • Tsinghua SIGS sets up a complete post-graduate education and degree awarding system and established an academic degree committee.

  • Two new graduate programs were launched: The Tsinghua Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Engineering PhD Program and the SIGS- Tencent Interactive Media Design and Technology Program. Tsinghua SIGS and Tencent jointly established the Interactive Media Design and Technology Center to carry out professional master’s degree education, establish a system of professional courses and develop frontier technology and social application research


6. Projects win national awards, research groups publish in international journals

  •  Wu Qianyuan and Wu Guangxue received the 2018 National Science and Technology Progress Award (second prize) for their work on water quality at urban centralized reclaimed water systems

  • Wang Zhi received the 2018 National Natural Science Award (second prize) for his work on large-scale multimedia systems

  • Guo Zhenhua received the 2018 National Technology Invention Award (second prize) for his project on fingerprint recognition

  • Wang Xiaohao/ Tang Fei team developed certified non-invasive blood glucometer

  • Wang Xiaohao / Lin Liwei team, Kang Feiyu / He Yanbing research group, Yang Cheng research group, He Yonghong / Liu Le research group published their research in internationally renowned journals.

7. SIGS faculty win academic and teaching awards 

  • SIGS faculty members Liu Bilu, Fang Lu, Jin Xin, Dong Yuhan, He Yonghong and Zhang Chengping won teaching awards from Tsinghua University

  • Project involving SIGS faculty and the Department of Automation on Application-oriented Talents in High-level Control Engineering won first prize in the “Tsinghua University Teaching Achievement Award”(2018)

  • Courses "Visual Symbol Design" by Huang Wei and "Advanced Operations Research" by Zhang Canrong were awarded Excellent Courses by Tsinghua University.

  • Li Jia won the Early Career Award of Computational Materials Science  (2019), Li Huan received the UN Environment LCA Award and Li Bing won Guangdong Natural Science Funds for Distinguished Youth Scholar (2019).



8. TBSI celebrates first cohort of graduates 

  • TBSI held its first graduation ceremony. TBSI Co-Director Gao Hong and Connie Chang-Hasnain, Associate Co-Directors Wai Kin (Victor) Chan, Lin Liwei and Slav Hermanowicz jointly witnessed the graduation of 37 students, including 6 Ph.D. and 31 master’s graduates.

  • The second meeting of the TBSI International Advisory Committee was held. Academic authorities and industry leaders from the United States, Britain, Japan and other countries gave an evaluation of the first five-year cooperation plan between Tsinghua University and University of California at Berkeley. The committee also provided ideas for the future development of TBSI.

  • TBSI held its fourth retreat conference. Open to the public, the conference attracted more than 500 participants.


9. Innovation and Entrepreneurship at SIGS achieves fruitful results 

  • Tsinghua SIGS fully supports student innovation and entrepreneurship, and saw great results at events such as the 2019 Shenzhen Dream Catcher Cup University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Contest, the 2019 Community Entrepreneurs Cup and the 2nd IEEAC International Youth Entrepreneurship Competition this year.

  • The I-Space Bootcamp was held to nurture students with innovative sprit, global competence, team spirit and a sense of mission.




10. Campus Development gains progress 

  • SIGS officially opened its new 22-floor office research complex. With a total investment of 330 million yuan, the building covers a total construction area of about 51,485 square meters.

  • The SIGS Phase I building budge was approved and construction work officially started.
