TBSI students win IEEE PES GM Best Paper Awards

Two students from the Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute (TBSI) Smart Grid and Renewable Energy Lab won Best Paper Awards at the 2020 IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) General Meeting held virtually in Montreal, Canada.  

Held once a year in North America, the IEEE PES General Meeting is the world’s top international conference in the electric power industry. After two rounds of review, the conference selected 66 Best Papers out of 800 accepted papers.

Ph.D. student Yang Lun’s paper titled “Stochastic Dispatch for Power and Gas systems under Uncertainties in Gas Network” considered uncertainties originating from gas network parameters in the coordinated dispatch problem for the first time, and proposed a two-stage stochastic dispatch method to investigate the effects of uncertain network parameters on the dispatch solutions. Yang is first-author and collaborators include TBSI Assistant Prof. Xu Yinliang, Ph.D. student Xu Zheng, and Prof. Sun Hongbin.

Master student Yang Tianshu’s paper “A Distribution System Loss Allocation Approach based on a Modified DistFlow Model” proposed a novel cold-start linear branch flow model and a loss allocation approach for distribution networks, which can eliminate the over-collection of losses caused by marginal loss coefficient method in electricity market. Yang is first author and collaborators include TBSI Assistant Prof. Guo Ye, Ph.D. student Deng Lirong, master student Shu Han, Prof. Sun Hongbin, and research scientist Dr. Shen Xinwei.

Other papers by postdoctoral fellow Tang Wenjun, “Industrial Load Scheduling and Bidding Strategy for Demand Response – Case Study for a Steel Mill”, Ph.D. student Yi Zhongkai “Massive Distributed Resources Participation in Smart Grid Multi-time-scale Operation”, and master student Shi Runye “Optimal Heat Flow in District Heat Networks with Tree Topology: A Convex Approach” were also accepted in the conference.

The TBSI Smart Grid and Renewable Energy Lab has achieved great results at past IEEE PES General Meetings. In 2019, the lab received four Best Paper Awards at the conference, two of which were first-authored by master student Chen Cong (now Ph.D. student at Cornell University) and Ph.D. student Deng Lirong (visiting at UC Berkeley), mainly advised by research scientist Dr. Shen Xinwei and PI Prof. Xuan Zhang, respectively. The two other papers were co-authored by TBSI Assistant Prof. Guo Ye, and one paper in collaboration with UIUC won “Best of the Best” award.

The TBSI Smart Grid and Renewable Energy Lab aims at a more intelligent, secure, and optimal power system operation and provides fundamental mathematical theory and algorithms. The lab also focuses on planning and operation for Energy Internet and Integrated Energy System (IES), including the planning and operation of Transmission/Distribution/Microgrid/IES, development of IEMS (Integrated Energy Management System), application of Artificial Intelligence and Big Data technology, etc. In addition, the lab is developing transmission and distribution automatic inspection technology based on online smart devices and expert systems, as well as high-voltage external insulation testing & monitoring.
