  • About Us

    The Institute for Hospital Management, Tsinghua University (THU) is the first institution to provide professional interdisciplinary healthcare management programs in China. With strong support from the Beijing main campus and Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School (SIGS), the Institute trains future public health and health care leaders in China, and has attracted both international and domestic faculty members since its establishment in 2012. The Institute offers a master degree program (full-time or part-time) and a joint doctoral degree program with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The Tsinghua-Hopkins PhD program involves faculty members from both universities, and holds classes at Beijing and Baltimore, US.



    Program Information

    The Institute currently offers a full-time Master in Hospital Management (MHA) program and part-time Master in Executive Hospital Management (EMHA) program, both spanning 3 years or 5 to 6 semesters. Our full-time MHA program is based in the Tsinghua SIGS Shenzhen campus, located at the heart of the Greater Bay Area connecting Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau. Our part-time EMHA program is mainly located at the Beijing THU campus.


    Students are required to complete a thesis and defense in order to graduate. A Master of Public Administration (hospital management track) will be awarded upon satisfactory completion of all courses and approval of the examination committee. The core curriculum is listed below:

    Internship Opportunities

     Hospital internships are offered for students of our MHA and EMHA programs. The institute has affiliations with hospitals in the Mainland, Taiwan and AHMC Healthcare Inc. in California, US. These affiliate hospitals offer 6-week to 8-month training opportunities depending on the curriculum, and provide unparalleled opportunities for students to put their knowledge to practice.



    Our Faculty

    The Institute strives to provide innovative approaches and international perspectives to public health education. To enhance diversity and quality of teaching, our courses are taught by faculty members from the Tsinghua main campus, as well as universities in the US and China’s Taiwan.


    Healthcare Research

    Students are encouraged to participate in research activities at the institute with faculty members and adjunct professors at affiliate hospitals. Faculty members have been awarded with research grants from both government and private sectors, and many students act as part time research assistants. The institute currently has five research centers including:

    • Center for Domestic and Foreign Hospital Evaluation and Accreditation

    • Center for Management of Medical Service and Research

    • Center for Medical and Health Laws and Policies

    • Center for Medical and Health Institution Operation and Development

    • Center for Big Data of Health Care and Evidence-based Medicine


    These research centers conduct cutting-edge research and collaboration in the health-care and medical fields. The Center for Domestic and Foreign Hospital Evaluation and Accreditation, for example, is currently working on a joint quality improvement research project with the International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua), Ireland.

     A number of research institutions have also been set up in areas of China’s medical reform and hospital construction. These institutions will further leverage overseas resources to accelerate the creation of a world-class research platform for hospital management and enhance the international influence of the Institute.



    Learning Abroad

    We encourage students to take advantage of our partnerships to gain global perspectives on our healthcare system and integrate theory into practice. The Institute has signed agreements with Harvard University, Yale University, Johns Hopkins University, Birmingham University of Alabama, University of Toronto, University of Birmingham, and University of Taiwan to organize academic exchanges and visits for students.


    We also cooperate with leading hospitals worldwide to provide internships and various student programs. These include affiliated hospitals of Yale University and Johns Hopkins University, Cleveland Clinic, AHMC Healthcare Inc. Hospitals, The Hospital for Sick Children (Toronto), National Taiwan University Hospital, Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital, China-Japan Friendship Hospital, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Shanghai General Hospital and many more.


    Applicant requirements

    Applicants for the full-time MHA program must have a four-year bachelor’s degree, whereas applicants for the part-time EMHA program must have 4 years of hospital or healthcare related professional experience and a bachelor’s degree.
