On December 17, Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School (Tsinghua SIGS) held an award ceremony for the Tsinghua i-Space Innovation Challenge, bringing the six-month long competition to a successful close.
Focusing on the topic of pandemic prevention and control, the Innovation Challenge aimed to increase social responsibility and innovation among students, as well as strengthen integration between industry, academia and research.

Wu Xiaofeng, Secretary of the CPC Tsinghua SlGS Committee said in his address that innovation is the first driving force for social development. He shared that Tsinghua SIGS has always attached great importance to innovation and entrepreneurship education, encouraging students to consolidate their knowledge, and make use of innovative thinking skills and modern technology to serve the country and society. Wu looks forward to future outcomes as members of the Innovation & Entrepreneurship Education Alliance of Shenzhen continue to collaborate in the future.

Ma Yongbin, director of the Tsinghua SIGS Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Center, introduced the background and goals of the competition. He pointed out that unlike other entrepreneurial competitions, the challenge focused on innovation, and all topics are based on actual research. By strengthening interaction between higher education institutes and society, Ma expressed hopes that more innovative and entrepreneurial talents that contribute to society will be nurtured.
Some projects showcased at the finals
On the finals held on December 16, 20 teams showcased their innovative projects. Some focused on mental health issues during the pandemic, elderly needs, parking issues, fitness at home, and other topics. These projects aimed at providing practical solutions to social problems and explored innovative pandemic prevention methods across different scenarios. First place was awarded to the “Sky-FAST campus personal data reporting system” team for their creativity.
An exhibition was held after the award ceremony to promote exchange and communication among young entrepreneurs in Shenzhen. The event showcased outstanding projects from Tsinghua i-Space, the SIGS Doctor of Engineering Program, Shenzhen University, Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen), The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and Shenzhen Polytechnic in the past year, covering fields of artificial intelligence, biomedicine, energy and environmental protection and more.
The 2020 Tsinghua i-Space Innovation Challenge was initiated by Tsinghua SIGS, the Innovation & Entrepreneurship Education Alliance of Shenzhen and the Shenzhen University Town Management Office, with the guidance of the Development and Reform Commission of Shenzhen Municipality and the Shenzhen Education Bureau. The competition received strong support from technology and industrial parks in the area, and 16 higher education institutions in Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macao.
