Tsinghua SIGS team wins award at AI and Robotics Competition

The finals and award ceremony for the first “Tsinghua University Guoqiang Research Institute Cup” Global Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition was recently held at Shunde, Foshan.

The “Searcher” robot team from the Intelligent Robots Laboratory at Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School (Tsinghua SIGS) won the Innovative Design Award in the scenario application challenge.

Since the competition’s launch at Tsinghua University last October, hundreds of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics projects at home and abroad have signed up for the event. Projects involved unmanned systems, machine vision, human-machine hybrid, AI algorithms, 5G, block chain, big data and other innovative technologies. After several rounds of qualifiers and competitions, 12 teams were able to enter into the finals.

In the scenario application challenge, 6 teams took turns to complete a series of tasks which focused on climbing, obstacle avoidance, autonomous navigation, communication systems, intelligent control, natural language communication and image processing. These tasks evaluated the robots’ potentials to be applied to areas of construction, rescue, commerce, and medical care.

"Searcher", designed with a dual-swing arm crawler chassis and a dexterous manipulator, has the ability to traverse rugged terrain, stairs, puddles and other complex road conditions. It is able to open doors, as well as grasp and transfer objects. It is also equipped with infrared perception, SLAM mapping and force perception, and has autonomous navigation and remote control capabilities.
