Tsinghua SIGS faculty win 2020 Shenzhen Science and Technology Awards

Published:2021.01.11

On January 6, the 2020 Shenzhen Science and Technology Awards were presented to those who have made outstanding contributions to Shenzhen's technological innovation and development.

Municipal Party Secretary Wang Weizhong, Director of the Standing Committee of Shenzhen Municipal People's Congress Luo Wenzhi, and Shenzhen CPPCC Chairman Lin Jie attended the event.

Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School (Tsinghua SIGS) Associate Professor Qi Mingyao’s team won the second prize of the Shenzhen Science and Technology Progress Award with the project "Key Technologies and Applications of Smart Port Intelligent Clearance System”. Associate Professor Wu Guangxue’s team won the Shenzhen Science and Technology Award (Standard Award).

Targeting common technical problems of intelligent customs clearance systems at domestic and international ports, Qi Mingyao and his team have formed a collaborative management and control solution for intelligent customs clearance, logistics companies, and transport vehicles. Results have been applied to national strategic projects such as the construction and operation of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge port, "Belt and Road" cross-border logistics, construction of integrated transportation systems in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and convenient customs clearance between Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

Wu Guangxue served as project convener and the team developed the ISO standard “Water reuse in urban areas—Guidelines for centralized water reuse system—Part 1: Design principle of a centralized water reuse system”. The standard proposes design principles and methods of centralized water reuse systems considering key aspects of source, treatment, storage, transmission and monitoring, puts forward four centralized water reuse models, and clarifies the relationships among treatment technology, water distribution, and utilization pathways. This standard has become the basis for formulating the Portuguese "Guidelines for Wastewater Reclamation and Utilization", the Portuguese Water Reuse Law (No. 119/2019), and other important documents. It has also been adopted as domestic standards by the British Standards Institute (BSI) and the Association Française de Normalisation (AFNOR).

This year, 628 applications were received for the 2020 Shenzhen Science and Technology Awards, the largest number of applications since the award was established.

Tsinghua SIGS will continue to conduct research to tackle major challenges and lead innovation. It will help Shenzhen build a pilot demonstration area of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and contribute to the sustainable development of Shenzhen, the Greater Bay Area, China and beyond.
