SIGS students take home innovation and entrepreneurship awards

Student projects from Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School (Tsinghua SIGS) have achieved outstanding results at recent innovation and entrepreneurship competitions.

Sou Kit Wa, a master’s student in Data Science and Information Technology, and his team won the Silver Prize at the 6th China International College Students' "Internet+" Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition with the project “Chinese medicine skincare products with AI diagnosis and skin analyzer".

The project combines big data and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) diagnosis and treatment to develop precise skincare products and services. By analyzing users’ skin condition and body constitution, targeted skincare solutions can be provided. The project aims to solve current problems of accuracy, precision and effectiveness in the TCM beauty industry. By quantifying TCM diagnosis and treatment methods, skin concerns can be targeted more accurately and efficiently, thus reducing trial and error costs of patients.

The student team consists of Sou Kit Wa and Tan Jiaqi from Tsinghua SIGS, Zhao Yingzhi from the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, Choi Hou Lon from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and Ma Zhuanqing from the University of Bristol.

Wang Jing, a master’s student in biomedical engineering, and his team took home the National Bronze Award in the 12th "Challenge Cup" National College Student Entrepreneurship Plan Competition with the project “AI+Mueller microscope early cancer diagnosis system”.

The project is dedicated to the industrialization of a Mueller polarizing biomicroscope for the early screening of cancer. The early diagnosis system uses a Mueller microscope to collect polarization information of pathological slices, then processes data using AI and big data analytic methods, enabling quantitative diagnosis and quick detection of early stages of cancer such as skin and cervical cancer.

During the competition process, the Tsinghua SIGS Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Center provided guidance for teams to optimize their projects and encouraged them to transform innovation into entrepreneurship. In 2020, the “Internet+” competition received 1.47 million entries, while the "Challenge Cup" competition attracted 179,000 entries from 2786 higher education institutions across the country.
