The 2nd TUM-Tsinghua SIGS Online Research Workshop on Smart Materials, jointly hosted by Tsinghua SIGS and the Technical University of Munich (TUM), was held online from May 31st to June 1st, 2022, Beijing time. Yang Bin, vice president and provost of Tsinghua University, Juliane Winkelmann, senior vice president of TUM, and Zhang Chuanjie, associate dean of Tsinghua SIGS, attended the event.

Since the signing of the flagship partnership in 2020, Tsinghua and TUM have continued to deepen the cooperation between the two institutions. Last November, the first Online Research Workshop on Smart Materials took place.

In his opening remarks at the workshop, Yang Bin highlighted how the event would strengthen the cooperation between the two institutions. He further emphasized Tsinghua’s efforts, which include the workshop, in mitigating the impact of the pandemic on higher education. On the topic of 50 years of diplomatic relations between China and Germany this year, Yang remarked: “It is our privilege to hold this joint event and deepen our partnership in this meaningful year. Background

Since the first cooperation agreement was signed in 1994, Tsinghua University and the Technical University of Munich (TUM) have held exchanges in the fields of aerospace, chemistry, micro-nano electronics, automation, civil engineering, and construction. On October 9th, 2020, Tsinghua University and TUM signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to form a flagship partnership. The flagship partnership marked a further deepening of cooperation between the two institutions.

At present, cooperation between Tsinghua SIGS and TUM in joint scientific research, student exchange, joint training, innovation, and entrepreneurship is being actively discussed and promoted. The two institutions jointly held the Tsinghua-TUM Talks (TT Talks), an annual event that started after the MoU, to strengthen exchanges between SIGS and TUM researchers in key areas of interest. The Tsinghua-TUM Talks, co-organized by Tsinghua SIGS and TUM Beijing Liaison Office, will continue this year around the tentative topic of cultivation of top talents in the field of carbon neutrality.
