Commencement Ceremony 2023 celebrates SIGS graduates

The Tsinghua SIGS Commencement Ceremony 2023 was held on the morning of June 16. This year, over 1300 students will be graduating, including about 50 doctoral students and over 1200 master’s students.

Attendees included school leaders and representatives of faculty advisors, graduates, staff, alumni, and graduates’ family members. Guan Tian, deputy secretary of the CPC Committee, hosted the event.

In his remarks at the ceremony, on behalf of the school, Secretary of the CPC Tsinghua SlGS Committee Wu Xiaofeng expressed warm congratulations to the students who have successfully completed their studies and are about to embark on a new journey in life. He remarked that this year’s graduates have witnessed the rapid development of the school and rapid progress in science and technology during their graduate careers. He offered advice on how graduates should approach the next steps in their lives, encouraging them to work hard for their country and for a brighter future for mankind.

Student speaker Wen Jiawei

In his speech, Wen Jiawei, a master’s graduate in Electronic Information (Internet+Innovation Design), looked back on the past fulfilling and exciting three years. He said that no matter where he went in the future, he would bear the brand of Tsinghua University and SIGS.

Liu Peiyuan, an alumna of the master’s program in Environmental Science and New Energy Technology and doctoral graduate in Environmental Science and Engineering, shared what she learned while at SIGS about truth, kindness, action, and caring for the world. She said that graduation is not only an end but also a beginning, and she wishes for her fellow graduates to move forward with brave hearts, take firm steps, and embark on a wonderful life.

Tymoteusz Swistek, an international student from Poland and master’s graduate in Electronic Information (Artificial Intelligence), expressed that his time at SIGS allowed him to deeply experience the accumulated history of Tsinghua and the charm of Shenzhen. He expressed his desire to stay in Shenzhen to contribute to the machine vision industry, give back to his alma mater, and be a part of this brilliant and splendid generation.

After the student speakers, Guan Yuntao, a researcher from the Institute of Environment and Ecology, spoke on behalf of faculty advisors. He offered “three pieces of knowledge” to guide their future work and life. “Today, we are proud of Tsinghua; in the future, Tsinghua will be proud of us. Finally, Guan Yuntao wished for the students to move forward in their respective paths in the future and realize their ideals in life.

After, Yu Lu, Tsinghua alumna and vice director of the Shenzhen Tsinghua University Alumni Association, addressed the graduates. Yu Lu is also the deputy secretary of the CPC Committee of the Urban Planning and Design Institute of Shenzhen (UPDIS) and a professor-level senior engineer at the institute. Yu Lu offered advice based on the phrase “borderless and unbounded.” She wished that an abundant spirit would allow the graduates to be stronger and more interesting and that a determined heart would allow them to go farther and soar higher.

I still remember the day when I first entered school, it was a sunny afternoon; I still remember the professors and classmates in the auditorium, that's where I first met them, Xin Yinghao, a master’s graduate in Logistics Engineering and Management said. Three years have gone by in an instant and the professors have accumulated a few gray hairs. We will go to all corners of the country to make our own contributions to the development of the country and social progress. I wish my parents and professors good health and a bright future for my classmates and friends. I wish my alma mater the best!”

Today, we not only have the joy of academic success but also the reluctance to wave goodbye, Zhang Xiangyu, a master’s graduate in Civil and Hydraulic Engineering, said. He expressed his sincere gratitude to his professors: I will never forget their teachings.”

Earlier that morning, before the commencement ceremony, graduates participated in a long-distance run around campus.
