Program Overview

As an emerging factor of production, data serves as a crucial engine for building a digital China and advancing Chinese modernization. In the era of the fourth industrial revolution, achieving breakthroughs in core big data technologies and maximizing the utility of fundamental data resources are keys to fostering the development of new quality productivity. The Master's program of Big Data Engineering is designed to support the strategic goals of building a digital China. This program breaks the black box of big data; establishing a knowledge system that covers data acquisition, storage, computation, analysis, and typical applications. It cultivates high-level talents with solid theoretical foundations, strong practical skills, and innovative capabilities in dataset establishment, data governance, adaptive data computation, feature mining, and analysis—all in service of the major strategy of building new quality productive forces. Benefiting from the industrial development advantages of the Greater Bay Area, this program actively explores collaborative training with industry-leading enterprises and promotes reforms in engineering master's education and teaching. It integrates high-quality industry resources into every stage of student development—from admissions, coursework, and research projects to training bases and research topics. This has led to the establishment of a comprehensive, end-to-end school-enterprise joint big data talent cultivation system, training bases, teaching faculty teams, cutting-edge enterprise teaching platforms, and curriculum systems, resulting in outstanding achievements.


Cultivation Achievements

The students in this program have published numerous high-level academic papers in top academic conferences such as NeurIPS, CVPR, IJCAI, ICLR, as well as leading prestigious journals such as IEEE TPAMI, IEEE TIP, TNNLS, etc. Multiple individuals have received honors such as Outstanding Master's Thesis from Tsinghua University, Outstanding Graduate from Tsinghua University, Outstanding Graduate from Beijing, National Scholarship, College Professional Practice Scholarship, and Huawei Excellent Practice Project. Students also actively participate in domestic and international data mining competitions, achieving significant accolades such as the ACM MM Super Challenge Championship, ICCV Video Description Track Championship, First Prize and Best Performance Award at the International Autonomous Robot Competition, First Prize at the International Data Science Competition, and dual-track championships at the NTIRE Image Quality Assessment Competition, and more. In addition, the students' side projects were highly recognized by Huawei, Tencent, Kwai, and other practical enterprises, and played an active role in reducing costs and increasing efficiency for enterprises. Graduates join high-tech enterprises such as Huawei, Tencent, Alibaba, Baidu, BYD, and China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation, as well as national key government agencies, effectively leveraging their diverse skill sets acquired through comprehensive training in the Big Data Engineering Program, SIGS.


Talent Training

This program has established joint training bases with Huawei and the Shenzhen Transportation Planning and Design Center, and collaborates with multiple leading big data enterprises. Through cutting-edge technology projects, it cultivates students' practical abilities and research thinking that integrate fundamental innovation within industry demands. This helps develop multiple high-quality university-level courses and Huawei Intelligent Base premium courses to train big data talents with a solid theoretical foundation. It also introduces new frontier big data courses to meet the needs of emerging digital industries and builds the Huawei Kunpeng Teaching Computing Platform to actively conduct professional course experiments and innovative training, thereby nurturing the seeds of talents urgently needed by enterprises. Additionally, the program brings together outstanding teachers specializing in big data research that will be covering cutting-edge research and application areas, which establishes a first-class multidisciplinary faculty team. It hires experienced industry experts to form enterprise mentor teams, with school and enterprise mentors collaboratively guiding students. By integrating internationally top scholars and industry experts with significant contributions in the big data field into the project's training advisory committee, the program ensures the standardization and forefront of its training.
