PhD Students Recruitment in Charles M. Lieber's Research Group at Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School

1. Introduction

Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School (Tsinghua SIGS) is proud to announce that Prof. Charles M. Lieber has joined our institution and is now seeking highly motivated and talented students to join his research group for PhD studies.

 

Charles M. Lieber is a world leading researcher who has made seminal contributions to the synthesis and application of nanostructures in electronics, photonics, bioelectronics and biomedicine. More recently Lieber has pioneered the development of tissue-like electronics that are being used to revolutionize brain-computer-interfaces and the development of Neurotechnologies that can address human diseases. Lieber is a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Medicine, and American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has received a number of awards including the Welch Award in Chemistry and Wolf Prize in Chemistry. Lieber has also mentored and strongly supported the careers of numerous young scientists who now hold tenured faculty positions at top Universities around the world.


2. Research Areas

Lieber will direct highly-interdisciplinary research at i-BRAIN – the Institute for Brain Research, Advanced Interfaces and Neurotechnologies. The overall mission of i-BRAIN is to develop transformative brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) that blur the distinction between electronics and the brain to enable groundbreaking research understanding the brain and brain diseases as well as breakthrough technologies for treatment of neurological and neurodegenerative diseases. i-BRAIN will create solutions for the near-term but also enable future advances and treatments that today may be considered the realm of science fiction. Additionally, Lieber is committed to instilling a positive and highly interdisciplinary culture in the training of young scientists, engineers and doctors such that they are prepared to lead the development of science and engineering as well as the translation of ideas into commercial technologies that benefit present and future generations!


Prof. Lieber is seeking highly motivated and talented students to join his research group for PhD studies. Applicants from a broad range of backgrounds, including but not limited to Physics, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Electronic Science and Technology, and Artificial Intelligence, are welcome to apply.


3. Qualifications for Applicants

· Educational Background: Applicants should hold a bachelor's or master's degree in relevant fields. Degrees in Mathematics and Physics, Applied Physics, Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Biological Sciences, Biotechnology, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Multidisciplinary Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science and Technology, Microelectronics Science and Engineering, Electronic Science and Technology, Measurement, Control Technology and Instruments, Micro-electro-mechanical Systems Engineering are preferred. A strong academic record with a high GPA is expected.

· Research Experience: Prior research experience is highly desirable.

· Language Proficiency: For non-native English speakers, a TOEFL score of 80 or above, or an IELTS score of 6.5 or above is required.


4. Application Process

· Online Application: Applicants should complete an online application via Tsinghua International Graduate Program Online Application Portal (https://yzbm.tsinghua.edu.cn/intlLogin) before May 31, 2025. Please fill in all the required information accurately and upload the following supporting documents:

A personal statement clearly stating your research interests, career goals, and reasons for applying to Prof. Lieber's research group.

Degree certificates and degree authentication.

Academic transcripts from your undergraduate and master's studies (if applicable). Transcripts should be officially translated into English if the original language is not English.

Two academic recommendation letters from scholars who hold the title of associate professor or higher, or senior professionals in a related academic field. Please follow the instructions on the online system for submission of online recommendation letters or upload the recommendation letters signed by references.

Proof of English language proficiency (TOEFL or IELTS scores). For students who have attended full-time program where English is the principal language of instructions are eligible to request English language proficiency waiver by providing official transcripts.

· Application Deadline: The application for international students admissions (2025 Fall Intake) closes at 17:00 p.m. Beijing Time on May 31, 2025.

· Selection Process: The applications will be first screened by the admissions committee at Tsinghua SIGS. Short-listed candidates will be invited for an online comprehensive assessment interview. The final selection will be based on the overall evaluation of the applicant's academic rating, comprehensive ability and research potential.
