On August 26, Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School (SIGS) held an opening ceremony for its incoming graduate students.
The first part of the ceremony was broadcasted live from Tsinghua University in Beijing. President Qiu Yong delivered a speech entitled “Give warmth to life and strive for dreams”. He asked students to keep their hearts and minds open for others, uphold the value of fairness and justice, aspire for a more caring world, and work hard to achieve their dreams as young people.

Yang Ying, a master’s student from Tsinghua SIGS spoke as first year representative. She shared her volunteer experience in Wuhan during the pandemic, and said that she will shoulder on responsibilities and pursue her dreams at Tsinghua.

After the event at Tsinghua University ended, SIGS proceeded with its own ceremony.
Executive Dean Gao Hong delivered a speech, expressing her admiration for students who were able to overcome various obstacles during the pandemic and finally joined as a part of the Tsinghua community. She asked for students to not only learn and develop professional skills, but also broaden their ways of thinking, strengthen their ideals and beliefs, and prepare themselves for the workplace.

Gao expressed her expectations for students to enhance their global competence, uphold academic and professional integrity at all times, maintain curiosity and an open mind, develop an entrepreneurial spirit, and to bravely embrace difficulties in life.
Wednesday marked the 40th anniversary of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, and an increasing number of Tsinghua alumni have devoted themselves to the development of Shenzhen and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Gao hopes that students can explore and experience the innovative culture of Shenzhen, and find a place of fit within the city.
Associate Professor Liu Bilu of Tsinghua Berkeley Shenzhen Institute (TBSI) spoke on behalf of faculty. He encouraged students to develop the ability to ask critical questions and solve problems; improve communication skills, and work together with classmates to help each other grow.

Gao Chao and Yu Yuchen spoke as student representatives. Gao encouraged incoming students to incorporate the spirit of Tsinghua with Shenzhen’s distinct qualities. First year student Yu said that she will grasp opportunities and contribute to the development of Shenzhen and the Greater Bay Area.

This year, more than 1,600 students have joined Tsinghua SIGS in areas of electronic information, resources and environment, energy and power, materials and chemical engineering, TBSI and Open FIESTA interdisciplinary programs, architecture, and more.
