Building a global center for research in functional materials
  • Goals

    We will leverage Shenzhen’s and Pearl River Delta’s industrial advantages, solve bottleneck technologies in material applications, and promote the transformation of energy and information technology through structural and functional integration, intelligent materials and devices, and green manufacturing processes. Frontier research and innovation in high-performance materials will be carried out and applied to fields of energy, information, health and aerospace. We will build a global center for research in functional materials and devices, and provide world-class training for research and industrial talents in the field of new materials.


  • Research Areas

    Our five research areas include: low-dimensional materials and devices, energy materials and devices, material design and computation, information functional materials and devices, and biomedical materials and devices.

  • 01
    Low-dimensional materials and devices: Research on nanomaterials such as zero-dimensional quantum dots, one-dimensional nanotube and nanowire, two-dimensional graphene and other two-dimensional atomic crystals for the development of flexible and multifunctional high-performance devices.

    Energy materials and devices: Rechargeable lithium power batteries and systems, wearable energy storage devices, generation, conversion and utilization of renewable energy, heat transfer and thermal management materials, and other areas to improve performance and reliability of energy storage devices.

    Material design and computation: Material computation and design, structure and performance prediction, electron microscopy of microstructures, as well as topics such as atomic-scale visual analysis of crystal defect configurations and high-throughput computing.

    Information functional materials and devices: Research on smart piezoelectric materials, sensing materials, spintronic materials, bio-electronics and more for smart/information materials and devices, multiferroic materials and novel magnetoelectric devices with ultra-low power consumption.

    Biomedical materials and devices: Research and development of tissue engineering materials, biological information devices, nanomedicine engineering, biomedical material processing, and bionic materials to meet the demands of an aging society.
