Based on the intersection of 21st century architecture and related disciplines, we will focus on frontier issues of future human habitats, and take design thinking as the core innovation force to create smarter and more sustainable built spaces. We will make full use of Shenzhen’s unique advantages in urban construction, gather the latest concepts in design thinking and human habitats, and build a think tank hub to disseminate knowledge and conduct leading research in future human habitats.
Major support will be given to the "1+3" research structure, which includes one research center, Global Innovation Center on Design Thinking for Future Human Habitats, and three research fields: Future Urban Science and Supporting Technology System, Digital Architecture and Intelligent Construction, and Innovation Center for Humanity Technology of Future Human Habitats.
The Global Innovation Center on Design Thinking for Future Human Habitats will face design thinking theories of future human habitats, and respond to transformation and development needs of global architecture and engineering fields. Using design research as a tool, the center will carry out experimental, prototype and exemplary research, develop design research theories and key tools, and explore the intersection of technology and humanistic thinking in its research. We will promote cooperation and exchange with top international architectural disciplines, and strive to build a world-class design thinking engine and think tank.

Future Urban Science and Supporting Technology System consists of two major directions: future urban science and planning, and future city supporting technology.
Future urban science and planning is based on urban planning and design. This direction explores the combination of new technologies such as AI, big data, GIS, and 5G with other disciplines, and will dive into topics including smart city, CIM and intelligent traffic to build new future urban theories and technologies.
Future city supporting technology includes city low-carbon energy system, urban intelligent management, and healthy city. City low-carbon energy system focuses on realizing a gradual shift from a fossil energy-dominated energy structure to renewable and sustainable energy utilization. Urban intelligent management aims to improve city functions, ensure city safety, and improve the efficiency of urban systems. Healthy city explores the theories and technologies to achieve a healthy environment for human habitats, focusing on key factors that affect urban health, and providing technical and policy interventions to support the “Healthy China” strategy.
Topics of research: city low-carbon energy system, smart city system, urban information model CIM system, urban intelligent management system, urban big data 5G sensing and acquisition simulation environment, healthy urban human habitat environment system and others.
Digital architecture and intelligent construction is based on the intersection of big data, 3D printing, and AI technology in the field of cities and buildings. Research focuses on large-scale 3D printing technology for composite (fluid and powder) consumables and practical building materials (concrete), architectural design-build integrated collaborative system based on sensor feedback, digital city planning, digital building design and their evaluation methods and technologies based on data analysis, algorithm generation, and calculation simulation. We will focus on establishing a scalable software and hardware platform, and updating corresponding architecture knowledge structures to provide new means and tools for future city planners, architects, builders and managers.
Topics of research: building generation, sensing, feedback and collaborative control center, intelligent unmanned construction equipment integration platform, ground and air multi-dwelling collaborative construction robot group, concrete and composite new material printing system, construction equipment integration module, robot curtain wall installation system, composite new material structure processing and inspection system, 3D printing building full life cycle 5G monitoring system and others.
The Innovation Center for Humanity Technology of Future Human Habitats aims at the relationship and innovation between the future development of human habitat technology and changes in user terminals, and is oriented to human cognitive experience, content transmission, meaning shaping and changes in the way people interact with the environment. It will carry out design innovation based on humanistic research, and explore design integration innovation between cognitive science, information science, media communication and smart devices. It will also establish a network for the transmission of architectural culture with the help of brand-new contemporary cultural dissemination methods.
