To Those Who Walked With Us

——在清华大学深圳国际研究生院2026年毕业典礼上的发言

尊敬的各位老师，亲爱的同学们:

大家好。我叫大卫，来自格鲁吉亚，一个东方与西方相遇的国家。

When I first arrived in China, I realized I had far more to learn than just Chinese. The first thing I learned was to scan QR codes – they are everywhere! But these were all small things. In time, you get used to them. And what truly matters has never changed. It is people!

I came to understand this because of someone who had been with me since my very first day in China. One day, he was in the lab, helping me with experiments. The next, we learned he had to fight for his health. And in that time, he did not speak of achievement, nor of fame or ambition. He spoke of how much he treasured the conversations we had while working side by side. That meant so much to me. Before then, I had been so fixated on my experiments that I had forgotten: I am not just a researcher, but a person above all. In that moment I understood: so often we are too busy, too busy to truly see the people beside us, and too busy to remember that we ourselves are people too.

But my friends, here is the most precious gift of this day. We do not need to wait for a hard time to see what matters most.

Today, this graduation lets us see it clearly, right now, with our whole future still ahead of us. Because what carried us to today was never our own effort alone. It was the friend who stayed beside us after we failed. It was the classmate still helping us in the middle of the night. It was the postdocs and mentors who gladly shared their experience with us. It was the teachers who believed in us, and the families who stood by us, no matter what.

Tsinghua taught us one phrase: 行胜于言 — actions speak louder than words. So let us not simply hold this gratitude in our hearts. 

Let us give our warmest applause to everyone who walked with us to this day. 现在请把最热烈的掌声，送给陪伴我们的人。And remember, this applause belongs to you as well. Because you were there for others too, and to them, you mattered deeply.
