  • Biography

    Xiaomei Nie is an Associate Professor at Tsinghua SIGS and the director of the communications office. Her academic interests include global brand communication, social innovation and digital design, and art and design theories. Her recent work focuses on interdisciplinary research at the intersection of design and information technology, such as digital media applications in cultural heritage preservation, education, healthcare, brand communication, and social innovation.

    She has published three books and over 60 academic papers. Her accolades include the Shenzhen City Outstanding Achievement Award in Philosophy and Social Sciences, the Tsinghua University Teaching Achievement Award, and the Tsinghua University Online Teaching Innovation Case Award, Outstanding Course at Tsinghua SIGS and Shenzhen City Elite Shared Course etc. Under her supervision, students have won more than 70 awards in international and domestic innovation design competitions.With extensive experience in corporate brand strategy and communication, Prof. Nie has planned and executed projects that received over ten honors, including the China’s Top Ten Marketing Campaigns and the China Media Innovation Marketing Award.

    Prof. Nie is also an accomplished artist and critic, working in ceramics, oil painting, and digital media. She has published art books and critical essays, and is a member of the Guangdong Artists Association, the Guangdong Young Artists Association, and the Women Ceramic Artists Committee of the China Ceramic Industry Association.


    Education

    Prof. Nie earned her Bachelor's degree in Radio /TV Journalism and her Master's degree in Communication from Xiamen University. She obtained her Ph.D. in Design from Tsinghua University. Under the support of the China Scholarship Council's High-Level University Graduate Student Joint Training Program, she conducted research and studies at Columbia University in the United States.

  • Research Interests

    Professor Nie's primary research areas include: global brand communication strategies, social innovation and digital media design, as well as art theory and practice. Her work focuses on interdisciplinary research integrating communication studies, design, and information technology, employing digital design to advance brand strategy, cultural heritage preservation and innovation, educational innovation, healthcare, and other fields to promote social innovation and cultural communication.

     

    Current Research Projects:

    1.Digital Design for Social Innovation: Conducting theoretical and applied research in the field of social innovation design. At the Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Next-Generation Interactive Media Technologies, she leads the team of interactive media design research  applying digital media design to cultural heritage conservation and innovation, educational innovation, healthcare, and other areas of social innovation.

    2.Global Brand Communication Strategy: Research on transnational brand communication strategies. Invited by CCTV’s China National Brand research team, she conducted a study on Brand Communication Strategies of Global Economic Powers. Her research and practical achievements in brand communication have been adopted by multiple enterprises and institutions.

    3. Cross-Cultural Art Communication: She also teaches art history and theory at Tsinghua SIGS. Her research examines global art communication from the perspective of mutual learning among civilizations, including studies on Eurasian cultural migration and artistic exchange, as well as global women artists.
